You understand the benefits of steam and you want to find the best steam mop for cleaning your hard floors.  Steam has been used to clean and sanitize for a long time. The technique has been revitalized around the world because of a renewed interest in steam’s ability to clean and sanitize without the use of harsh, environmentally harmful chemicals.  The best steam mop, with its hot moist steam, quickly breaks the bond between dirt and any surface allowing grime to be whisked away.

Best Steam Mop: O-Cedar Microfiber Steam Mop Cleaning ViewSteam mops clean and sanitize in one step using only water while eliminating harsh chemicals that can harm your family or pets. The best steam mop, when used properly, can also kill odor-causing bacteria on all hard floor surfaces leaving your home clean and deodorized.   The best steam mop saves you money by removing the need for expensive cleaning solutions or disposable wipes.

What should you look for in the best steam mop?

A powerful steam mop creates steam faster and has a more powerful steam flow that delivers dirt-busting power to your floors.  A more powerful steam flow also does a better job of sanitizing than a less powerful steam mop when used properly.  You can expect the best steam mop to generate 1400 watts of power or more

A larger capacity water reservoir provides a longer steam duration which means more cleaning between refills.  A powerful steam mop with a more powerful steam flow uses more water.

Best Steam Mop: Shark S3601D Professional Steam Pocket Mop Cleaning ViewSanitizing

Manufacturers would have you believe that simply running the best steam mop over your hard floor surfaces will sanitize them.  In truth, steam mops can kill some germs instantly, but not all, and killing germs takes time.  In other words, you will need to give the steam time to work by moving the steam mop much more slowly over your floors than you might think is reasonable.  When used properly, hovering over each area for 20 seconds, it is possible to kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria, but it won’t happen instantly.

Cleaning Path

A wide cleaning path means you can steam more floor space faster.  Be careful though.  Make sure that the steam mop you choose distributes steam to the entire mop head.  Steam mop heads have holes or jets in them where the steam exits to clean your floor.  The best steam mop with more steam jets will more evenly apply steam to your floor for better cleaning results.  A wider steam head gives you a wider cleaning path and will reduce the time it takes for your floor cleaning tasks. Your cleaning path is only as wide as the distribution of steam in the mop head.

Scrubbing Ability

Most steam mops use steam mop pads attached to the head to help loosen and capture dirt and sticky messes.  By itself, a steam mop pad is typically not a good scrubber, so if the mess is a tough stuck-on mess, the steam mop will probably have a difficult time removing it.  Most mops come with accessories for scrubbing and some even have a built-in scrubber just for tough messes.

Water Reservoir

Water reservoirs come in all shapes, sizes, and designs.  A large reservoir gives you the flexibility to clean longer between refills saving time.  Tanks can be removable so you can carry them to your sink and some models have fixed reservoirs that you have to fill at the steam mop by bringing water from your sink.    Which is best?  That’s up to your personal preference.  The convenience of removing the tank has the advantage of not having to carry water across your home, while a fixed tank may be larger.

If you prefer, some models of BISSELL steamer have the ability to accept scent discs.  These small discs are inserted into the built-in scent disc holder where they can be used to provide a burst of freshness while steaming.

Combination Steam Mops

Some steam mops come with built-in above-floor steam cleaners so you can tackle all your household cleaning tasks without having to have multiple machines.  These steam mops can save you time by allowing you to use the same machine to clean both your floors and your above-floor surfaces.

Specialized attachments such as grout brushes can make it easier to clean a wider variety of cleaning challenges in your home.

A long warranty means the manufacturer has faith in their materials and workmanship.  Look for the longest warranty on the type of steam mop your considering.  The best steam mop will have a long warranty.

What about Black and Decker Steam Mop? or Shark Duo?

  • Kim Harris
    Posted July 25, 2014 at 12:35 am 0Likes

Thanks for the comparison. I’ve owned the oreck, which I loved until my hubby tried to unclog it and broke it, rather than me being able to use the warranty or buy a replacement head. As a quick puchase, I got a shark which is pretty much worthless in comparison. I was prepared to buy another oreck until I saw the Bissell 1940 with the swivel head, which is my only complaint with the oreck not having one. But you have the swivel head listed as a con, my guess is that it may swivel when you don’t want it to. I had compared the other mops with my first oreck purchase and now with your comparison, I’ve decided to stick with the oreck. Plus, I have an extra set of scrub pads still in the box.
So, thanks for the comparisons for those of us who research too much, as I’ve been told I do!

Hi Kim, thanks for your comment. If you want to save money and get good performance from your products, there is no such thing as too much research! A lot of users complain about the swivel head because it just seems to make movement in many situations more of a pain than its worth. Not everybody agrees though. Oreck makes great machines. You usually can’t go wrong with their models. -Mark

    Hi Ridgeway,

Thank for sharing this nice post. I have a question about “Oreck Steam-It” :- Ordered this several months back but just used it for the first time recently. There does not seem to be much steam when I mop. Is that normal? Thank you…

Hi Kayla, the most common problem with all steamers is hard water. If you haven’t used it very much, you should have good steam flow. It’s only after weeks with not using distilled water that you would see a reduction in steam temperature and steam flow. There haven’t been a lot of complaints of poor steam flow right out of the box, so it sounds like a mechanical problem. I would contact the vendor on Amazon you purchased from and/or contact Oreck to see what they can do for you. You might also check out the FAQ at Oreck to see if others have gotten a solution through Oreck. I’m sorry I can’t be more help, but we don’t have a lot of information on problems with the Oreck Steam-It specifically. -Mark

I have a hoover steam/dry cleaner which doesn’t pass any water through the heating element and makes a clunking noise when the steam button is pressed. what could be causing this?

    • Mark Ridgeway
      Posted November 4, 2015 at 9:56 pm 0Likes

Wayne, by far the most commons problem with steamers is the effect of hard water. Although many brands claim that it’s okay to use tap water in their steamers, it’s not really okay. If you want a steamer to last you have to use distilled water. Tap water has minerals that “plate out” of the water and build up inside water lines and the reservoir. Sooner or later, that will cause the water lines, the heating element tubes, and steamer holes to clog. That’s what has probably happened in your case. There are techniques detailed online to remove the hard water build-up most involving vinegar and distilled water. You can try one of those. Depending on how bad the build-up is, you may have to replace the heating element if it’s replaceable. -Mark

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for sharing this greate article. I have a question about “HAAN SI-70 Multi Multiple Purpose Floor Steamer” I only want a mop cleaner for my outdoor balcony tile floor. The area gets dusty and wet but doesn’t require a heavy duty device. Is it worthwhile?

    • Mark Ridgeway
      Posted November 26, 2015 at 12:39 am 0Likes

Hi Linda, the SI-70 is probably more floor steamer than you need for your balcony tile floor. If you had other areas, the SI-70 is a great steamer. I would recommend either an inexpensive non-steam cleaner or a less expensive floor steamer. -Mark

I’m interested in a steam mop primarily to get the grouting on my kitchen and hallway floor clean and back to its white colour. Which steam mop would you recommend. I also have laminate flooring that I would like to use the steam mop on, but my main focus is getting the grouting clean. Tired of doing this by hand and strong cleaners.

Hello, I currently own a bissell powerfresh but need a bigger mop head and more steam points in the head. Do you know anything out there?

    • Mark Ridgeway
      Posted October 9, 2016 at 1:10 am 0Likes

Hi Curtis, you have the most popular and highly rated steam mop available. The only other one that has a shot at outperforming it might be the Shark Professional Steam Pocket Mop, but it’s head isn’t much bigger than your Powerfresh, and I have no information on how many steam holes are in any of the mop heads. Unless it’s doing a poor job for you, I would stick with the Powerfresh. -Mark
